Curtain Pole Fitting Guide for a Secure Finish

A curtain pole can look like a simple finishing job, until the brackets pull loose, the curtains do not clear the window, or the pole sits visibly out of level. This curtain pole fitting guide covers the practical decisions that make the difference between a tidy, secure installation and a job that needs doing twice.

The key is not simply drilling three holes above a window. You need to allow for the curtain heading, the weight of the fabric, the wall type and what may be hidden behind the plaster. Get those details right before fitting anything and the finished window will look balanced, work properly and stay secure.

Start with the right pole and bracket layout

Before measuring the wall, check the curtains themselves. Eyelet curtains need a pole that is slim enough for the eyelets to slide freely. Pencil pleat, pinch pleat and tab-top curtains can work with most standard poles, although the heading style affects how much space the fabric needs above the window.

As a general rule, choose a pole that extends around 15 to 30 cm past each side of the window recess. This gives the curtains somewhere to stack when open, allowing more daylight into the room and making the window appear wider. A narrow extension may be necessary where a wall, wardrobe or another window is close by, but the curtains will cover more glass when pulled back.

The pole should usually sit 10 to 15 cm above the top of the recess. This leaves clearance for curtain rings or eyelets and makes the room feel taller. However, bay windows, low ceilings, radiator pipes and trickle vents can all affect the final position. Measure the actual space rather than relying on one standard dimension.

Most poles need a bracket near each end and one central support. Longer or heavier poles often require additional brackets. Do not assume the fittings included in the packet are suitable for every wall or curtain weight. Thick lined curtains, blackout curtains and long curtains can put substantial load on a pole, especially when opened and closed every day.

Check the wall before drilling

The wall material determines the fixing method. This is where many failed curtain pole installations begin.

Solid brick and concrete walls usually provide the strongest fixing, provided the correct masonry drill bit and wall plugs are used. Drilling through the plaster and into sound brick gives the bracket a reliable hold. Avoid fixing only into loose mortar joints where possible, as they can crumble and may not support a heavy load.

Plasterboard needs more care. A light café curtain may be suitable for good-quality plasterboard fixings, but a full-width metal pole with heavy curtains should ideally be fixed into timber studs, a solid lintel or another structural point behind the board. New-build plasterboard walls can be particularly challenging because there may be a cavity behind the surface and the stud positions are not always obvious.

A stud detector can help find timber or metal framing, but use it as a guide rather than a guarantee. Check for consistency with small test measurements where appropriate. There may also be electrical cables or pipework around windows, particularly where lighting, sockets or radiators are nearby. Never drill blindly into a wall because a bracket position looks convenient.

If you live in a rented property, check your tenancy agreement or get the landlord's permission before drilling. Repairing several oversized holes later is more difficult than agreeing the work before it starts.

Measure and mark with care

Use a tape measure, pencil and spirit level. For long poles, a laser level can make the work quicker, but a good spirit level is perfectly effective when used carefully.

Start by marking the desired height above the window. Measure from the same point on the recess or ceiling on both sides, rather than measuring by eye. Next, mark the outer brackets at equal distances beyond the window opening. A symmetrical layout is usually best, even if the room itself has small imperfections.

Hold a bracket against the wall and mark each screw hole. Then check the distance between the marks and use the spirit level across the outer bracket positions. Do this before drilling. It takes a minute, while correcting a crooked pole after the holes are drilled can involve filler, paint touch-ups and a lot of frustration.

For a centre bracket, find the midpoint of the pole rather than only the midpoint of the window. If the pole extends further on one side due to a nearby wall or furniture, the centre support should still be placed where it supports the pole properly. On very wide windows, add support brackets according to the pole manufacturer's guidance and the curtain weight.

Choosing suitable screws and fixings

The screws supplied with a curtain pole are often intended for a straightforward solid-wall installation. They may be too short, too weak or supplied with basic plugs that are not suited to the wall in your home.

For masonry, use suitable wall plugs and screws long enough to pass through the bracket, plaster and into solid material. For plasterboard, choose a fixing designed for the board thickness and expected load. Toggle fixings, metal cavity fixings and specialist plasterboard anchors each have a place, but none should be treated as a cure for a very heavy pole fixed in a weak location.

The best fixing depends on the wall and the load. A pair of lightweight voile curtains needs a different approach from thermal curtains across a wide patio door. If there is any doubt, fitting into a stud or adding a timber support batten can provide a stronger, more dependable result.

Do not overtighten bracket screws

Once the correct fixing is in place, tighten the bracket firmly but avoid overtightening. On plasterboard especially, excessive force can crush the board or damage the fixing, reducing its holding strength. The bracket should sit flush against the wall without movement, but the wall surface should not be distorted around it.

Fitting the pole and curtains

With all brackets fitted, place the pole into position before attaching the curtains. Check that it is level from a normal standing position, as well as close to the wall. Small discrepancies can be surprisingly obvious once long curtains are hanging.

For ring-top curtains, put the rings on the pole before securing the finials. A useful method is to leave one ring outside each outer bracket. This keeps the leading edge of the curtain close to the wall and reduces the gap at the side of the window. It also helps block draughts and early morning light.

For eyelet curtains, slide the curtain straight onto the pole, keeping the folds evenly spaced. Make sure the eyelets can pass smoothly over the pole joins and bracket positions. Some poles have a central join that can catch eyelets or rings if it has not been assembled cleanly.

Open and close both curtains several times. They should move freely without the brackets twisting or the pole flexing. If the centre of the pole dips under the fabric weight, add a suitable support bracket before leaving the job. A slight sag becomes more noticeable over time and can stress the outer fixings.

Common curtain pole fitting problems

A pole that is too low is one of the most common issues. It can make the window look cramped and may stop curtains from opening fully. Raising it is possible, but it often leaves visible holes and requires repainting.

Another frequent problem is fixing to plasterboard with the wrong plugs. The pole may feel secure initially, then loosen after weeks of regular use. Heavy curtains create repeated pulling force, not just static weight, so the installation needs to be designed for daily use.

Uneven curtains are also often blamed on the pole when the real cause is the curtain drop. Measure from the pole or rings to the floor on both sides. Floors, ceilings and window recesses are not always level, particularly in older properties. A small adjustment to the heading tape or hooks can sometimes produce a better visual finish than forcing the pole to follow an uneven ceiling.

Bay windows need a different approach again. They may need a bay pole with bends, passing rings, separate poles, or a track system depending on the window shape and curtain style. Trying to force a straight pole around angles usually creates poor curtain movement and weak support points.

Curtain pole fitting is a sensible DIY task when the wall is straightforward, the curtains are light and you have the right tools. It is worth getting experienced help when you are dealing with high ceilings, wide windows, heavy curtains, plasterboard uncertainty, concrete walls or awkward bay layouts.
